Master of Science, Kinesiology, Physical Education Concentration

The Physical Education concentration program, offered online, emphasizes current pedagogical thinking, research, and teacher effectiveness in Physical Education. Students enrolling in the online program will be assessed the online tuition rate regardless of residency status.  The goal of the program is to produce master-level instructors who can integrate research and theory into current teaching practices. As a capstone experience, all students will complete an action research project. This program requires 36 semester hours.

Upon completion of the curriculum, students emphasizing Physical Education will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the research process and how it is used to solve problems.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of advanced concepts in Physical Education.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and skills in Physical Education in relation to human growth and development.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role of technology in Physical Education.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to relate current knowledge in Physical Education to authentic problems in pedagogy to the learning environment.

Admission Requirements

  1. Completion of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  2. Must possess a clear renewable (professional) teaching certificate in Physical Education or Health-Physical Education before starting the graduate program.
  3. Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 (4.0 scale)*
  4. A full vitae or resume that includes the following:
    • Work history
    • Professional experiences
    • Membership and participation in professional organizations
    • Other experiences related to the academic program, and
    • Contact information for a minimum of three references
  5. A personal writing sample that includes a description of teaching experiences and accomplishments, reasons for interest in the graduate program at Georgia Southern University, and career goals for the next five years. The written sample should outline the strengths and experiences that the applicant would bring to the graduate program.
  6. A lesson plan and formal assessment designed for a K-12 setting in Physical Education. The applicant may choose any activity that is taught in the K-12 Physical Education curriculum.
  7. A phone, internet, or in-person interview with a Physical Education graduate coordinator.
  8. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are not required.

*International transcripts must be evaluated by a NACES accredited evaluation service and must be a course by course evaluation and include a GPA. (naces.org)

Advanced Bachelor’s to Master’s (ABM) Information

Qualified students may be eligible for an accelerated bachelor’s to master’s (ABM) program. ABM programs allow you to begin graduate studies in your senior year so you can accelerate completion of a graduate degree. You’ll earn both a bachelor’s and a graduate degree faster.
