Doctor of Nursing Practice, DNP (Online Only)

Regular Admission Requirements

1. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree from an accredited institution with an advanced practice nursing focus.
2. Minimum undergraduate or graduate GPA of 3.0 (on 4.0 scale)
3. A minimum of 500 documented academic clinical hours in MSN APN preparation. Evidence of post-graduation clinical experience in the advanced practice role unless continuing immediately into DNP course work as post-MSN DNP student.
4. Current RN licensure in state of residence where clinical hours will be completed. Must also have a current RN license in Georgia as required by the Georgia Board of Nursing for all graduate nursing students.
5. American Heart Association Level C (2 person-BLS) CPR certification.
6. Three letters of recommendation from professional colleagues who can attest to academic and clinical acumen. Forms in the online application are acceptable, letters may also be attached by the recommender.
7. All international applicants, including resident and non-resident aliens, whose native language is not English and who do not have an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, are required to submit official TOEFL scores taken within the year immediately preceding the requested semester of admission. A minimum total score of 83, and minimum scores of 20 for each of the skills evaluated by the TOEFL: Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing. An original copy of the test score, sent by the testing agency to the Office of Graduate Admissions is required before any action is taken on an application. The copy of the score provided to the student and subsequently forwarded is not acceptable.

Grades

Students in DNP coursework must maintain a 3.0 average (“B” or better) in coursework to proceed in the doctoral program and to be eligible to graduate. Students may carry a “C” in one course, but they must repeat the course with a grade of “B” or higher. Grades in all courses applied toward the doctorate must be “B” or better. Students will become academically ineligible when any of the following occur in course work of an approved program of study:

1. a grade of “D”, “F”, or “WF” in any course;
2. a grade of “C” in any two courses; or
3. the minimum 3.0 average is not achieved within the minimum number of credit hours required for the degree.

Upon Acceptance into the Program

• Proof of current RN malpractice liability insurance (policy cover page) with name, dates of coverage an amount ($1 million incident/ $3 million aggregate)
• Proof of “student” malpractice insurance prior to entering ANY clinical course that requires clinical hours
• School of Nursing Student Health forms
• Georgia Southern University Health Services Form (must be completed prior to the first semester entry and completed each semester afterwards)
• Proof of APRN licensure

Some classes in the Post-MSN to DNP program are asynchronous. Those that are not meet on-line via WebEx on Tuesdays. The American Association of College of Nursing (AACN) requires a minimum of an additional 500 clinical hours Post-MSN to DNP degree completion. Thus, a Memorandum of Understating (MOU) may be needed for some courses.

Georgia Southern University enters into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with each clinical site according to procedures prescribed by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. An active MOU must be in place for students to participate in a clinical practicum. Once and MOU is in place and a signed preceptor agreement is approved by the faculty, students may begin their clinical practicum.
