Georgia Southern University is a Carnegie Doctoral/Research university providing the classic residential campus experience, complemented by an array of blended and fully-online graduate programming. Georgia’s largest and most comprehensive center of higher education south of Atlanta, nearly every state and nearly 100 nations are represented in the student body. Georgia Southern is a driving force in the life of the Coastal Southeast. Georgia Southern University located in Statesboro, GA, approximately one hour from Savannah, GA, one and one-half hours from Hilton Head, SC and only three hours from Atlanta, GA by car.

Statesboro is a vibrant college town. The culture and amenities of Statesboro reflects unique its southern heritage, higher education mission and a complimentary college town identity. This combination of provides the City of Statesboro and the University with energetic art and music scenes and a close-knit intellectual environment. Statesboro is home to numerous restaurants, bars, live music venues, bookstores and coffee shops and other privately owned businesses that cater to its creative college town climate. Georgia Southern University also offers a variety of cultural options for the University and its surrounding communities including The Georgia Southern Symphony, the Georgia Southern Planetarium, Georgia Southern Museum, and the Botanical Gardens. The Performing Arts Center offers traveling theater groups and national headliners each, as well as shows put on by Georgia Southern students and faculty.

Savannah’s architecture and history are internationally known, as is its reputation for Southern charm and hospitality; for example, the city’s former promotional name was “Hostess City of the South,” a phrase still used by the city government. Each year, Savannah attracts millions of visitors from across the country and around the world. Savannah’s downtown area is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States. The city’s location offers visitors access to the coastal islands and the Savannah Riverfront, both popular tourist destinations. Tybee Island, formerly known as “Savannah Beach”, is the site of the Tybee Island Light Station, the first lighthouse on the southern Atlantic coast. Other picturesque towns adjacent to Savannah include the shrimping village of Thunderbolt and two residential areas that began as summer resort communities for Savannahians: Beaulieu and Vernonburg.

Hilton Head Island or Hilton Head is a resort town (located on an island of the same name) in Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States. It is 20 miles (32 km) north of Savannah, Georgia, and 95 miles (153 km) south of Charleston. The island features 12 miles (19 km) of beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean and is a popular vacation destination. Hilton Head Island offers an unusual number of cultural opportunities for a community its size, including Broadway-quality plays at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, the 120-member full chorus of the Hilton Head Choral Society, the highly-rated Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, the largest annual outdoor, tented wine tasting event on the east coast, and several other annual community festivals. It also hosts the Heritage Golf Classic, a stop on the PGA Tour which is played on the Harbour Town Golf Links in Sea Pines Resort.


The Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies administers graduate degree programs for Georgia Southern University. More than 40 majors, concentrations, and emphasis areas are offered in within seven academic colleges.Georgia Southern University is a Carnegie doctoral/research institution and member of the University System of Georgia. Our residential campus is home to more than 20,000 undergraduate and approximately 3,000 graduate students.

The Office of Research promotes excellence in research at Georgia Southern University and provides oversight for research, technology commercialization and economic development activities. Research enhances the University’s education and service missions both at the undergraduate and graduate levels and advances the development of the region and the State of Georgia.

The Office of Research Services and Sponsored Programs supports faculty and staff in the acquisition, performance and administration of projects and programs funded from sources outside the University. The ORSSP is the central point of coordination for grants, and contractual obligations from individuals; government and public agencies; and industrial financial and private organizations to support sponsored research and service activities at Georgia Southern University.

The Office of Research Integrity is responsible for ensuring that the research conducted at Georgia Southern University is conducted in a responsible manner, consistent with federal and state law and University Policies.


Georgia Southern Athletics Website

Georgia Southern’s football team is one of the most successful in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, winning six national titles since 1985 and has also advanced to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs 17 times. In 2009, Georgia Southern University’s baseball team secured the Southern Conference baseball championship on its way to playing in the NCAA Regionals. It marked Georgia Southern baseball’s 12th NCAA Regional appearance and 4th Southern Conference Tournament title. Former Georgia Southern All-America quarterback Jayson Foster was named the winner of the Walter Payton Award for the 2007 season, honoring the most outstanding player in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA). Foster was Georgia Southern’s second Payton Award winner — Adrian Peterson, now a running back with the Chicago Bears, received the award in 1999.

Campus Recreation

The Department of Campus Recreation and Intramurals (CRI), an integral and active service of the diverse University community, supports and strengthens the mission of Georgia Southern University. Our purpose is to provide growth opportunities and educational experiences, which will enrich the life-long learning process.

Through our programs and facilities, which are recreational, educational and sporting in nature, we promote and develop healthy life-style choices. Benefits of participation include the application of leadership, decision-making, problem solving, conflict management, communication and social skills. We strive to provide the safest, cleanest, highest quality, most dependable and enjoyable services.

Club Sports

The Club Sports program is administered by Campus Recreation & Intramurals, with individual clubs being organized by students.

Although faculty and staff are permitted to participate in the club sports program, individual club governing bodies may restrict competition to current GS students. Most clubs are highly competitive at the state, regional and national levels.

Currently, there are 28 active Club Sports at Georgia Southern University.

Intramural Sports

Intramural Sports provide students, faculty and staff the opportunity for competition and fun in a variety of team and individual sports activities. Divisions are available for Men’s, Women’s, and Co-Rec teams in a variety of skill and competition levels.

Leagues, tournaments, and special events are offered for participants who desire a competitive atmosphere as well as those who desire a more social, recreational environment. It doesn’t matter if you are a star athlete or just want to have fun. Intramural Sports has something for everyone!

Georgia Southern Campus Map

Georgia Southern University hosts a more than 700-acre campus in Statesboro and is the largest university in southern Georgia. The park-like residential campus is home to numerous cultural activity centers including the Center for Wildlife Education and Lamar Q Ball, Jr. Raptor Center, a Performing Arts Center, the Georgia Southern Museum, the Georgia Southern Botanical Gardens, Center for Art & Theatre that includes an intimate Black Box Theatre, a planetarium and more. As a whole, the campus provides excellent amenities and facilities for all aspects of campus life – both academic, recreational, and cultural.

Our office schedules campus visits Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9am and 3pm. We do not schedule visits on Fridays.

Student Organizations

The Office of Student Activities has over 300 registered student organizations on campus so browse our listing of organizations to find one that piques your interest. If you can’t find an organization that you want to join, you can always start a new one.

The Graduate Student Organization (GSO) is committed to representing and supporting the interests of all current and prospective graduate students at Georgia Southern University. The GSO seeks to support scholarly activities and professional development, as well as promote social opportunities for graduate students.

Parking, Transportation, and Housing

Parking & Transportation Services is your one-stop shop for transportation in and around Georgia Southern. If you drive onto campus, we’ll help you find the best place to park, and sell you a parking permit that meets your needs and budget. If you use alternative transportation to commute to campus, or finding rideshare partners.
On-Campus Housing

Housing is available to new Graduate students on a space available basis. Graduate students are assigned to spaces located in either Centennial Place, University Villas or Freedom’s Landing. Typically new Graduate students are assigned to spaces beginning in mid to late April through the summer.
