Campus Can Expect 30-Minute Power Outage Before 2 p.m. Today

Around 2:45 a.m., officials responded to an explosion at the Georgia Power relay station located at Veterans Memorial Parkway and Highway 301 South in Statesboro. As a result, Georgia Southern University can expect a 30-minute power outage sometime today before 2 p.m. which may affect the entire campus.

Georgia Southern University Energy Manager Steve Watkins says, “Georgia Power has a substation issue that is requiring redistribution of loads throughout Statesboro.” Power from the damaged substation is being rerouted to other substations in the area; however, to prevent these other substations from overloading, they will be initiating rolling blackouts that will last 30 minutes to one hour at a time throughout the day. Because of the nature of the outage, officials cannot predict when or where the power outages will take place.
Current residence halls without power include the following:

  • Southern Courtyard
  • Southern Pines
  • Watson
  • Freedom’s Landing
  • University Villas
