The Grad Post, Spring 2021, Heather Huling, Double Eagle
Q: Where are you from?
A: I grew up in a military family so we moved around some, but I spent the majority of my time in Richmond Hill, GA before coming to college here at Georgia Southern. Since I loved Statesboro so much, I returned quickly after graduating and haven’t left since.
Q: What brought you to Georgia Southern for your first degree?
A: Georgia Southern was close enough to home, but yet far enough away to give me a true college experience. During my college tour, I fell in love with the atmosphere and saw myself here immediately. I applied the next day!
Q: Why did you chose to stay at Georgia Southern?
A: I chose to stay at Georgia Southern for many reasons. The connections I made with fellow students and faculty were amazing. My professors were great mentors during my undergraduate time, and I returned knowing I would experience the same level of support from them.
Q: Which degrees have you earned?
A: I have earned my B.S.Ed. in Early Childhood Education in 2008, my M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education with a Reading Endorsement in 2012, and finally I am on my quest to becoming a Triple Eagle! I am currently working on my Ed.D. in Curriculum Studies.
Q: Where are you now, and how has your education at Georgia Southern helped you get there?
A: I am currently a clinical instructor at Georgia Southern University in the Elementary Education program. I teach face-to-face classes on curriculum and literacy, while also supervising and mentoring teacher candidates in their elementary field experiences. My education at Georgia Southern helped me in so many ways to be where I am today. As a former graduate of the program I now work in, I had a foundation unlike any other. I can empathize with my students because I too have graduated from this rigorous program, I also get to work with faculty who were mentors to me during my time as a student at Georgia Southern. I love being able to work with so many amazing students and seeing them turn into Eagle Teachers, just as I did years ago.
Q: What does it mean to you to be a Double Eagle?
A: It is such a great honor to hold the title of Double Eagle. I take great pride in our university and the program I graduated from and now work in. Georgia Southern has allowed me to continue to grow in my profession and better myself as an educator and now teacher educator. I cannot wait to become a Triple Eagle and continue on!
Q: What’s next for you?
A: The sky’s the limit! I plan to complete my Ed.D. in Curriculum Studies and see where that takes me. For now, however, I will continue to be here, in beautiful Statesboro, working with our future Eagle Teachers!
