Tell us about your role in the Students with Disabilities Advocacy Group.

My name is Shea, and my role is to be a liaison between the graduate student body and the Students with Disabilities Advocacy group. We recently realized we are mainly a group consisting of undergraduate students, and we want to expand our advocacy on campus to include all students – and my position is part of our initiative to do so!

Tell us about the mission of the Students with Disabilities Advocacy Group.

Our primary mission is to create a safe haven and community for disabled students. Our secondary mission is to educate and advocate regarding disabilities and accessibility needs. We welcome disabled students and our able-bodied allies!

What are a few of the programs/events/support resources your group offers?

We offer biweekly meetings which have discussion topics and are offered in person and online. We also offer weekly study groups for SDAG members on the first floor of Henderson library on Thursdays at 5. We also have social events such as group dinners and Disabilities After Dark events for students to meet and discuss topics we care about.

Tell us about how current graduate students can get involved in the Students with Disabilities Advocacy Group?

Graduate students can join our Discord, which is our most social chat we have at the moment. They can also join our GroupMe and follow our social media accounts to keep up with events and topics we are focusing on! You can find all of these through our LinkTree: linktr.ee/SDAG

Is there anything else you can share with us about the Students with Disabilities Advocacy Group.

Some of our most attended events include our Disabilities after Dark events where we discuss various topics related to disabilities and accessibility. We welcome all our members of the community (not just those who identify as disabled, but also our able-bodied allies!) to come discuss with us!

One of our most attended Disabilities after Dark events, and some previous topics have been on chronic pain, rare diseases, disabled employment, and more! Keep an eye out on our socials for upcoming discussions!


The Grad Post, Spring 2023, Matt Dunbar, Director of Graduate Enrollment

Matt Dunbar began his career as an academic advisor at Georgia Southern University in 2013 after working in college athletics. He transitioned to graduate education in the College of Education (COE) at Georgia Southern in 2016 and became the Director of the COE’s Graduate Academic Services Center (GASC) in 2018 where he served for 5 years.

Matt and his GASC team focused on processes related to recruitment, admissions, and advising of prospective and current graduate students in the College of Education, which has the largest number of graduate students at Georgia Southern. As director, Matt led his GASC team in identifying ways to advance enrollment in the College through student recruitment and retention strategies, and he collaborated with college administrators and faculty to implement plans realizing enrollment growth of about 15% from 2018 to 2022. His team emphasized a student-centered approach, ensuring students felt supported throughout the entirety of their graduate experience through implementation of a staff advising model with staff advising more than 70% of graduate students in the college. 

Originally from California, Matt graduated from Washington State University and Florida State University before settling in Richmond Hill, Georgia with his wife Catherine, a graduate of Georgia Southern’s Counselor Education program and current school counselor in Bryan County. Matt and Catherine have a daughter named Alice who will turn 1 in March, in addition to two dogs named Copper and Joni.

Dr. Deepak Iyengar, Graduate Program Director

Tell us about your role as the Graduate Program Director.

My role as the Graduate Program Director is to:

  • Promote the Master of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management (MS-LSCM), Operations and Supply Management Certificate (OSMC), and Logistics and Transportation Certificate (LTC) programs to prospective students.
  • Coordinate with the College of Graduate Studies, Georgia Southern University and Office of Graduate Programs, Parker College of Business in granting admissions to applicants.
  • Coordinate with Office of the University Communications and Marketing, & the Marketing and Media Department of the Parker College of Business to make sure that the websites and marketing brochures are consistent with the objectives of the programs mentioned above.
  • Ensure compliance and reporting of the student learning outcomes for various accreditation bodies.
  • Communicate and market the program with industry associations in the Savannah Metropolitan Area.

Tell us about the new Master of Science, Logistics and Supply Chain Management program.

Logistics and supply chain management activities included in the program comprise freight and logistics management, supply management and production and operations management. Taken together, the program’s graduate level educational value proposition is relevant to a vast portion of enterprises with business activities in these areas. The program’s specialization is especially important to organizational needs of multi-modal freight transportation, warehousing and distribution, strategic sourcing and management of manufacturing and service operations.

The program is designed for working professionals seeking graduate coursework in logistics and supply chain management to enhance their acumen in order to enhance career opportunities. The program will consist of a stackable curriculum wherein two stand-alone certificates can be earned along the way to degree completion. These certificate areas are: 1) Logistics and Transportation; and 2) Operations and Supply Management.

Ultimately, the objective of the program is to enhance and improve management of supply chains by growing the knowledge, skill and abilities of graduates from the program. These value-added capabilities will provide career advancement opportunities to graduates and support economic development especially in intermodal transportation logistics, warehousing, distribution and production and service operations management.

Online MS-LSCM: MS-LSCM candidates can expect a challenging curriculum, designed to prepare them for positions of leadership across a broad spectrum of disciplines. The faculty have been recognized as leading researchers in their field.

The MS-LSCM program is 30 credit-hour (10 courses) program that is set up as a 1-year program. The MS-LSCM program offers 3 courses every Fall and Spring semester followed by 2 courses in the Summer A and Summer B mini-semesters. Since the required courses are offered on a 1-year rotating basis, the program can be completed in one year.

What does it mean to you to be honored as teacher of the year?

I feel so incredibly honored to have been named Teacher of the Year by my co-workers. I teach with a lot of amazing people and I feel so special and appreciated. I am honestly still in shock because it is not very often that Connection Teachers receive this special honor.

Where are you from?

I am from Howell, Michigan. I attended Our Lady of Mercy High School in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

Where are you now, and how has your education at southern helped you get there?

I currently live in Statesboro, GA and teach at William James Middle School. I just completed my 13th year of teaching middle school Health, Physical Education and Weight Lifting. My education from Georgia Southern University has had a major influence in my development and continued growth as a teacher. I still have great relationships with my professors and enjoy serving as a Clinical Supervisor for Georgia Southern student teachers each year. I learned how to create a challenging, safe, inclusive, structured learning environment for students to grow in.

What does it mean to you to be a Double Eagle?

I have a huge sense of pride being a student-athlete Double Eagle graduate from Georgia Southern University. I feel that all of my hard work and dedication is due to the path that Georgia Southern helped lead me down.

What does it mean to you to be honored as teach of the year?

It is a privilege to be named teacher of the year by your peers. Knowing your peers think you highly of you as a teacher means so much.

Where are you from?

Born and raised in Macon, GA and have lived in Brooklet for 18 years.

Where are you now, and how has your education at southern helped you get there?

I am finishing up my 19th year of teaching, 16 years in Bulloch County and my second year at Brooklet Elementary. My education at Southern prepared me to enter the teaching field, gave me the experience I needed to succeed, and the confidence to lead my own classroom.

What does it mean to you to be a Double Eagle?

I was born and raised an Eagle fan. Both my parents, aunt, and two sisters all graduate from Southern. Being able to get both my undergrad and graduate degree from the best university was always my dream!
